Astronomy Sun / Earth geometry

The relative positions of the Earth and the Sun vary during a year. The Sun is at zenith at noon solar time, but its elevation above the horizon changes from day to day for a same site. The same for the duration of the day. This service helps in answering these questions. It provides the position of the Sun in the sky.

Solar Declination, Distance Earth to Sun, Difference True and Mean Solar Time. For each day, get solar declination, distance between the sun and the earth, and the difference between true solar time and mean solar time. Provider: MINES ParisTech / Armines (France).
Daylength - Sunrise and Sunset. For each day of a period, get daylength and time for sunrise and sunset. A graph displays the change in daylength during the period. Hours are given in true solar time, mean solar time and universal time (UT). Provider: MINES ParisTech / Armines (France).
Position of the Sun in the Sky (applet Java). This applet Java computes the location of the Sun (zenith, azimut) as a function of the latitude and day, in true solar time (12 h = zenith). Provider: MINES ParisTech / Armines (France). More information
Needs Java to be installed. If necessary, download a version of JAVA (JRE) on the web site of the company Sun. Download is automatic and takes 1 to 2 minutes. It may be not necessary to re-start the computer.

Astronomy Extraterrestrial and ToA radiation
Extraterrestrial irradiance E0, also called extraterrestrial radiation. For each day of a period, provides the irradiance (W/m²) of a surface perpendicular to the sun rays, located at the limits of the atmosphere. It depends on the sun-earth distance, and thus on the date. Provider: MINES ParisTech / Armines (France).
Top of Atmosphere (ToA) Radiation received by a horizontal surface located at the top of atmosphere during a day. For each day of a period, provides the irradiance (W/m²) and irradiation (J/m², Wh/m²) of a horizontal surface located at the top of the atmosphere during that day and for a given site. Meteorology UV and spectral distribution
UV from HelioClim-1. Daily Values of UV Radiation - Europe - Africa. This service uses the spectral irradiation model defined by the Belgian Meteorological Office and reported in ESRA (vol 2, page 158), applied to the HelioClim-1 database. Period 1985-2005.

Outdoor Workers - Outdoor Professional Occupation ICNIRP guidelines on limits to UV exposure
UV exposure duration from HelioClim-1. Daily values - Europe / Africa. This service implements the ICNIRP Guidelines on protection against UV radiation regarding exposure of the skin. Reference: Guidelines on Limits of Exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation of Wavelengths Between 180 nm and 400 nm (Incoherent Optical Radiation). Health Physics 87 (2): 171-186; 2004. These guidelines are indicative as ICNIRP states that the use of the ICNIRP exposure guideline in an outdoor setting poses many problems of adequate dose assessment for the skin. Units - Converter Sexagesimal degrees and decimals
Sexagesimal Degrees into Decimal Degrees. Geographical coordinates are often given in sexagesimal degrees, i.e., in degrees, minutes and seconds (ex: 45° 30 min). However, computers are more familar with decimal numbers and it is necessary to convert the sexagesimal degrees into degrees with decimals (i.e. 45.5°).
General Formulation: latitude (degrees) = degrees + (minutes / 60) + (seconds / 3600)
Example: if lat = 45° 53' 36" (45 degrees, 53 minutes and 36 seconds), then: latitude = 45 + (53 / 60) + (36 / 3600) = 45.89
